Tribute to Loonkito(A Statement from TuNan Studio):
- At the beginning, the inspiration for this work came from Loonkito, the longest-living lion king. However, it was not created as a direct likeness. In my view, Loonkito represents a condensed reflection of the lives of many male lions. Therefore, I chose to pay tribute to this legend from an unconventional perspective.
-
This work does not focus on the traditionally defined “perfect” or “majestic” lion. Instead, it strives to express a sense of struggle through a gaunt, emaciated body.
-
“Life is the unfolding of a powerful will.” It is not about gentle submission, but about resisting emptiness and asserting the wildness of life in the process of “becoming oneself.”
-
Death is an important node in the life course of any living being. Here, the dying lion king is not reaching an “end,” but continues to release strength within the process of becoming—proof of “living through struggle,” a form of life within an “eternal cycle.”
-
When it comes to lions as a subject, I no longer want to create a “symbolized imagination,” nor reduce the lion to labels such as “king” or “courage.” Instead, through a thin, collapsing body, I present a kind of “embodied pain,” inviting us to witness animals not as tools for human values, but as beings with their own lived experiences.
-
At the same time, I deliberately attempt to “de-aestheticize” the symbol of the lion, hoping to provoke reflection on our habitual “aesthetic domestication” of animals in modern society. We are accustomed to seeing animals as full-bodied and powerful. This sculpture pulls the lion back from being an “object of viewing” to “life itself,” encouraging reflection on humanity’s disciplinary gaze toward animals.
