Travel back 29 million years to the Oligocene period. At that time, the Charleston region was covered by a warm epicontinental sea, creating a unique marine ecosystem where familiar giants such as Otodus (the great-toothed shark) and its ancient companion — odontocete whales — thrived.

Among these predators, Ankylorhiza tiedemani was one of the most remarkable members of the toothed whale lineage. With its advanced echolocation abilities and highly specialized, powerful front teeth, this ancient whale dominated the waters of the Chandler Bridge Formation and Ashley Formation.

Its nearly complete fossil skeleton has made it one of the star specimens of the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History. Based on the holotype specimen CCNHM 103, we have recreated this fascinating prehistoric marine predator with careful attention to its anatomy and scientific details.
