The "Frog Prince" of the Crystal Palace — Mastodonsaurus
In 1854, animal artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins created a series of prehistoric sculptures under the guidance of the renowned paleontologist Sir Richard Owen. Although these sculptures may not be completely accurate by modern scientific standards, they represented the most advanced understanding of prehistoric life at the time.
Beyond their scientific significance, these creations also reflected the imagination, craftsmanship, and humanistic spirit of the Victorian era. More than a century later, they remain an enduring symbol of the early exploration of paleontology.
Among the many prehistoric creatures displayed in the magnificent Crystal Palace collection was the fascinating amphibian that inspired this artwork — Mastodonsaurus.
Known as the "Frog Prince" of the Crystal Palace, Mastodonsaurus was one of the largest amphibians of the Triassic period. With its enormous skull and powerful aquatic lifestyle, it represented a remarkable chapter in the evolution of early amphibians.
